Working with the Content Management System (CMS)
Getting Started   Next >>

Welcome to the Byte Productions' Content Management System (CMS) demonstration.

This tutorial will walk you through each step to create the navigation and pages of your new website. We have created generic CMS screenshots as examples. They will not look exactly like your site, but the CMS structure will work exactly the same way.

Let's get started!

1Let's take your first look at the management section of the CMS. To navigate to this screen on your site open your site manager (we should have already provided you with the link), and click on 'Manage Content' in the left side bar.

2Don't be overwhelmed by the CMS screen! We are going to walk you through each button and menu to get you fully comfortable with managing your site's content. Go ahead and open your live site in another tab in your browser. While you are working in your CMS, you can easily toggle back and forth in that window between the Manager screen and your live site so you can watch the process. As you build your site structure in the CMS, the menu on your live site screen will display the navigation you've built.

3In this instruction window you see a menu at the left that will walk you through each section of the help screens. If you are a beginner, we recommend that you start at the beginning and advance through the entire instructions one section at a time. If you are just refreshing your skills, feel free to jump to whatever section you need.

4The '<< Back' and 'Next >>' links above on the right will walk you through the entire instructions one screen at a time.

5By now you should know the general layout of your site. If you have not yet determined this then it is recommended that you sit down and create a layout on paper in an outline format like the examples below:

  1. Top-level Page
  2. Top-level Navigation
    1. Mid-level Navigation
      1. Page
      2. Page
    2. Mid-level Navigation
      1. Page
      2. Page
      3. Page
  3. Top-level Page
  4. Top-level Navigation
    1. Page
    2. Page
  5. Top-level Page
  1. About Us
  2. Products
    1. Shoes
      1. Sandals
      2. Tennis Shoes
    2. Hats
      1. Baseball Caps
      2. Winter Styles
      3. Sun Hats
  3. Our Suppliers
  4. Find Us
    1. Map
    2. Contact Form
  5. Our Friends

6Each numbered line in your site outline will need to be defined as an individual page, a navigational guide, a form, etc. This is done by clicking on 'Define New' in your site manager for each item, one at a time.

7For the purpose of this tutorial we will be using this sample outline laid out on the right here. Before you begin working in the CMS on your own site, make sure you have already laid out your own similar site outline to work with.

8Go ahead and advance to 'Tree Structure' in the navigation on the left, or click the Next button on the top right to learn more about the outline layout.
